Target Sprint returns to Southampton, run by Target Sprint Educator & GB Selector Stephen Batchelor, and the team from the 21st Romsey Scout and Rifle Clubs.
Report by Stephen Batchelor.
Another enjoyable competition for the 4th year. It is so nice to meet so many new faces to target sprint and the return of many who have clearly been training well. Our event although different than most with a mix of tarmac, grass and an indoor range boasts a friendly atmosphere. Being a sport for all we also put on pistol shooting, bell targets and coconut shy as side activities along with refreshments being available whilst athletes and spectators were waiting for the heats.
I would like to thank all those who entered the event and the volunteers who assisted in running this as without them we could not host the event. Our largest contingent of entries came from Scouting but entrants came from far and wide. Wales, Farnham, Surrey, Portsmouth, Southampton, Knaphill and Goring by Sea.
The event went well and although there was a question raised about one of the targets this was immediately proved not to be an issue after being knocked down by range staff using one of the supplied rifles and had seen clear rounds by other shooters throughout the event and in sighting time. The fastest time recorded on the day was in the penultimate heat by James Baxter GB Squad member of 5m20s closely followed by JJ Culshaw 5m36s and Kieran Gall 6m00s.
For the Adult females we welcomed a new athlete to target sprint Joanna Shillington a runner who only picked up a rifle for the first time 7 weeks prior and managed to pose for cameras during one of her runs.
As this is also a scouting event we also have a team/group trophy which was won for the 3rd year running by 21st Romsey Rifle Club comprising of Sophia Elliott, Jasmin Elliott and Matthew Batchelor.
Congratulations to those who qualified for the National Series Finals in Yate in October, who now have time to train prior to this exciting upcoming event and we look forward to seeing there.
We have already set the date for next years competition being 11th May 2019, and we are looking forward to seeing and hearing about the over events on the lead up to the finals of this quickly growing sport.
