The first Isle of Wight Target Sprint took place at the weekend led by Richard Wilson, who went on to say “I saw the sport in its purest form yesterday. If that’s what Target Sprint is all about, I’m 100% committed.”
Rain didn’t dampen spirits or stop play in anyway yesterday but was just the beginning of exciting times for the sport of target sprint and shooting on the Isle of Wight.
Richard Wilson has been, and still is, involved with shooting sports to elite level for many years. Having seen target sprint he was inspired by the sport and the potential it has for the community on the Isle of Wight. He went on to say; “It was emotional for all the positive reasons!
“In such tough weather conditions such as 40+ mph gusts of wind and horizontal rain, our athletes gave it their all. 100% was put down by each and every one.
“I witnessed the sport in the purest of its form yesterday, the likes I have never seen before. If that’s what target sprint is all about, then I’m in 100%. My team and I are committed to support the event on the island and even hope that will be through to its inclusion in the Island Games.”
Richard and his team have shown true dedication to the sport of Target Sprint. In August Stephen Batchelor, Target Sprint Educator from the Regional Centre 21st Romsey Rifle Club, delivered a Target Sprint Leaders course to coaches on the IOW. As a result of having qualified Target Sprint Leaders and connection to shooting & running expertise, British Shooting were thrilled to award Target Sprint Isle of Wight TSA with the official Hub status.
Richard said; “To be awarded the Hub status was a massive boost for shooting sports on the island. It’s a recognition of the shooting on the island and the combination of hard work and support over the years.
“We might have produced British and English Champions in the past but look out for what’s to come!
